Kanang anak Langkau, an extraordinary Iban tracker noted for his bravery, was conferred two gallantry awards.
His exploits were many, he was even called to duty on his wedding day. He fought with his troops on Hari Gawai (Harvest Festival fo the Ibans) during the Setia 8/97 movement.
He was almost defeated by the Siliwangi army during Konfrantasi. A member of the Setia Special Operation Force in early 1980,
The incidents.
When fighting together with over 30 comrades of the(Platun Gempur Batalion Kelapan, Rejimen Renjer Diraja (RRD) )fighting with a communists at Perak in yaer 1980, Kanang was shot three times in a row by the communists.
The bullet from behind has penetrating his heart & chest at the same time . Moments later, two more shots from the front when both bullet has penetrating his urinary tract and had caused his left kidney damaged.
Kanang the bloodied and lifeless that time, while waiting for help arrives,with gallant heroic carrying his subordinate after seriously injured shot by the communists.
He was unconscious for a whole week from his injuries, and spent a month in the Intensive Care Unit. He spent an entire year in hospital after that.Two gallantry awards.

The Communist Insurgency began in 1967 and ended in 1989. In June 1981, Kanang was awarded Panglima Gagah Berani and Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa medals from the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ahmad Shah. |
The highest gallantry award Pingat Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP) was received from result of the battle with the communists at Singapore, in February 1980.
A year before he accepted (Pingat Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB) ) for his brilliance and bravery for shoting dead five communists at Hutan Simpan Korbu, Sungai Siput, Perak.
The Star .Apr 15,2009..Kanang has rescued Baby Orang utan
On 15 April 2009, he made headlines after rescuing a baby orang utan from captivity with his friend, Tay Choon Yong. The baby orang utan was being handed to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.

The Datukship award.“The thing is I don’t hold grudges. Fighting for this country has taught me that peace is the ultimate goal. It taught me that positive thinking is important, that criticising others will only make you and the person you’re talking to sad.”
Recently, the government would like grant him the Datuk Title, but was rejected by him nicely.
"I'm not a rich, I'm poor. If have received the title of Datuk, I have to change my appearance and lifestyle , and have to hire a driver for which I am not afford to pay. "
Agi Idup Agi Nelaban
Rentap's battlecry was Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban!! which means I will fight as long i will live!!.This legendary battlecry later become Malaysia's Royal Ranger Regiment motto.which inspired Kanang as an Iban.
