After being kept at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre for the past 25 years, the 30-year-old Ritchie was yesterday adopted by Orion Expedition Cruises from Australia who contributed A$7,750 (RM23,591) for the adoption.
It means that Orion Expedition Cruises will take care of Ritchie, the “big boss” and the alpha male orang utan at the centre, for two years under the Sarawak Forestry’s Orang Utan Adoption Programme.
The adoption programme supports orang utan conservation works which involve projects on orang utan conservation, educational programme to promote awareness and food and medication.
There are 20 orang utan kept at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre which are adopted by various corporate organisations. Among the oran utan that have been adopted are Annuar, Anaku and Ganya.
The oldest orang utan in the centre is Seduku, dubbed the Grand Old Lady. Seduku is a mother of three and was released 17 years after completing her rehabilitation course in 1995.
