How part of Borneo & Dayak joined Malaysia Nation?

**Happy 50th Malaysia Day(1963-2013)**

Tun Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Temenggong Jugah anak Barieng, also known as Tun Jugah, (1903 – July 8, 1981) was a Malaysian politician of Iban descent from the state of Sarawak. He was the Paramount Chief of the Iban people for more than 55 years. They affectionately called him "Apai" meaning "father" in the Iban language.

Tun Jugah played a fundamental role in bringing the state of Sarawak into theFederation of Malaysia on 22 July 1963. He was a state leader, and was the first Sarawakian and Iban Federal Minister in charge of Sarawak Affairs in the Cabinet of Malaysia. He was elected a member of Parliament during Malaysia's first elections in 1963.
How Part of Borneo  & Dayak joined Malaysia?

In May 1961, when Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj, affectionately known as ‘Bapa Malaysia’, mooted the idea of forming a new federation which would embrace Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei, there was grave concern about the political stability and security of South-East Asia.

The key finding of the Cobbold Commission was that 80 per cent of the people of Sarawak would support her entry into the new federation, provided that there were requisite safeguards for the state and her multi-racial and multi religious population, and only 20 per cent ‘hard core’ group would oppose the formation of Malaysia “under any terms and conditions.”

Following the Cobbold Commission Report, a joint statement was issued on Aug 1, 1962 by the British and Malayan governments expressing any intention to conclude a formal agreement for the formation of Malaysia which would provide for safeguards for the special interests of North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak, and these safeguards would cover such “matters as religious freedom, education, representation in the Federal Parliament, the position of the indigenous races, control over immigration, citizenship and the state constitutions.”

BORNEO HORNBILL FESTIVAL KL 2011(21-24 JULY 2011)
The Borneo Hornbill Festival is an event showcase with the objective of promoting the traditional Borneo Arts and Culture to all Malaysian and Tourist from all over the world. Borneo, knowingly as the third (3rd) largest island in the world, is consisting of East Malaysia Sabah and Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan.

Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east and the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. It is the largest island in the Malay archipelago, with the area of 743,330 square kilometers (287,000 sq mi).

The Borneo Island is divided into three countries; which are Brunei, Indonesia and East part of Malaysia that is Sabah & Sarawak. Borneo with its beautiful scenery attracts more than a thousand tourists each year. With its green & clean nature, Borneo became the most unique place for tourists to spend their holidays. The traditional arts and culture is really maintained and preserve by the locals as this will benefits them when tourists visited their places in terms of tremendous growth of tourism industry.

Borneo is very rich in biodiversity compared to many other areas. It is the centre of evolution and radiation of many endemic species of plants and animals. There are about 15,000 species of flowering plants and trees. Thus, there were 221 species of mammals and 420 species of resident birds. The Borneo rainforest is one of the only remaining natural habitats for the endangered Borneo Orang Utan. It is also an important refuge for many endemic forest species such as the Asian elephant, the Sumantran Rhinoceros, the Borneo Clouded Leopard and the Dayak Fruit Bat. It is known as one of the most biodiverse places on earth.

The Borneo handicraft is one of artistry handwork by the people of Borneo. Wooden carvings, pearls, necklace, bamboo, rattan, goat skin, brooch, rings, Pua Kumbu and many more handicrafts are originally made in Borneo. Besides that, Borneo has the colorful and beautiful traditional costumes. The costumes were unique because there were beads, and small coins are sewing on the clothes. With these costumes, the Borneo people were so proud to wear them and perform in front of the tourist, in any function even during celebration such as Harvest Festivals. There were different traditional dance by the people based on the ethnic and race. And what is more unique about Borneo, they dance with all the handicrafts and accessories that they made. Also, they use the bamboo to create the dancing atmosphere such as in Melanau traditional dance.

As to preserve the Borneo heritage, Persatuan Warisan Sarawak Kuala Lumpur(www.warisansarawak.net) is trying the best to maintain the existence of the heritage for locals and tourist viewing, and have the chance to experience it.
